June has been an exciting month so far for Wales Rally GB with the official media launch for 2008, tickets going on sale and the announcement from organisers that the event has become the first round of the FIA World Rally Championship to be awarded CarbonNeutral® event status.
Organisers chose World Environment Day on 5 June to launch 2008's final round of the FIA World Rally Championship to the world. Andrew Coe, Chief Executive of event organiser International Motor Sports (IMS) Ltd. made the welcome announcement that ticket prices would once again remain low for this year's event, starting from just £1.
For 2008 one of the biggest discounts is on tickets for children, with the new 'kid for a quid' initiative. This applies to upper tier Millennium Stadium seats as well as entry to the service park in Swansea, ensuring that this world-class event is an affordable option for families; a rare phenomenon in the sporting world.
The Saturday evening inside the Millennium Stadium is back and once again promises to be the ultimate spectator experience, boasting international rally stars, a world-class stadium and full entertainment package starting at 5pm. Tickets will be available on the day but huge savings of up to £10 per ticket can be made if purchased in advance - a family of four can attend from just £28.
The World Rally Pass - which allows access to Shakedown on Thursday, all forest stage car parks on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the Service Park in Swansea on all four days - still represents the best value for money for those wanting to enjoy the whole event. The cost remains the same as last year - £90 for an adult and £45 for a child. This year if purchasing in advance - before August 1 - adult spectators will save £10 (children £5) and receive a voucher to save 10 per cent off official rally merchandise.
It was also announced at the launch that Wales Rally GB has become the first round of the World Rally Championship to offset its carbon emissions. Wales Rally GB has positioned itself at the forefront of a more sustainable future for motorsport by achieving CarbonNeutral® event status, meaning the event's carbon footprint is now 'net zero'.
A carbon audit carried out on the event concluded that only 5 per cent of the event's emissions are caused by the rally cars themselves, with the greatest source found to be travel to and from the event by spectators, teams and officials. The great news therefore, is that with a dedicated sustainability programme in place organisers will be able to reduce the environmental impact of the event year upon year.
Included in Wales Rally GB's calculations of its emissions is all spectator travel to and from the event, so rally fans can travel to Wales knowing that their carbon footprint has been offset for them.
