Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala have maintained their one-two formation during the second day of Rally Poland, round eight of the FIA World Rally Championship.
Dani Sordo remains third and it has been the Citroëns that have set the pace today, with Sordo and Loeb collectively claiming victory in five of the six stages. Sébastien Loeb, who retired yesterday and started this morning in 32nd position, has fought back to 13th after a string of fastest times.
Sordo was equally impressive this morning, halving the deficit to Hirvonen, but the Fords fought back this afternoon leaving the Spaniard 38.5 seconds adrift of the lead.
Today’s route took in another two loops of three stages and the pace at the top of the leaderboard has been fast and furious. Behind the leading trio, who have all had a trouble-free day, reigning Junior World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier has performed impressively, matching the pace that saw him reach the podium in Greece two weeks ago.
He has climbed from sixth to fourth, having overhauled both Petter and Henning Solberg. The three crews remain locked in a battle for fourth position split by less than nine seconds.
Matthew Wilson has maintained seventh position and local hero Krzysztof Holowczyc has climbed to eighth.
Sunday’s final day of competition in Rally Poland includes just five stages. However it will be no cruise to the finish with another 86.86 competitive kilometres to cover.
