Bothwell rally driver Alick Kerr rounded off a successful season with a solid drive on Saturday’s Colin McRae Forest Stages.
A broken driveshaft on the Leaker Direct Subaru Impreza slowed Kerr’s progress early on, but the 21 year-old recovered to end the rally fifteenth overall and eleventh Hankook Scottish Rally Championship competitor.
The result allowed Alick to clinch the Scottish championship’s Class 12, edging out the Mitsubishi of Barry Groundwater by a single point. Foundry engineer Kerr also took seventh spot in the final overall Scottish standings, while co-driver Drew Sturrock secured fourth place in the co-drivers’ title race.
The result becomes all the more impressive when one remembers that the Alick Kerr Motorsport team only acquired the Subaru in April. Prior to that, Alick had never driven a four-wheel drive vehicle competitively, however over the last six events the junior driver has established himself as one of the consistent frontrunners on the Scottish rally scene.
This hopefully won’t be the last rally of the year for Alick Kerr, though. The youngster is hoping to contest the Rally of Scotland – the final round of the competitive Intercontinental Rally Challenge – in November, but Alick admits this is dependent on budget.
“The rear driveshaft broke early on in the Drummond Hill stage, and we reckon it cost us at least two minutes,” believes the Leaker Direct Impreza driver. “We recovered to set some very competitive times, and as has been the case earlier in the year we ended up with a good haul of points.”
“We’re very keen on doing the Rally of Scotland as it is a very high-profile event that will allow me to measure myself against the top competitors in Europe,” he continues. “But this is entirely dependent on being able to secure a budget. We will need to hire a car, and to do that requires funds.”
