Tobermory01.jpgWith the Announcement of the Provisional Route for the 2008 Tunnocks Tour of Mull, It was a surprise to see Glen Aros / Hill Road being pulled back in as SS1. The daunting 13.9 mile stage is one of the fastest and demanding sections of road on the Island. The run up the super fast Glen road to Dervaig Village where spectators await on the flood-lit junction to see the cars before they climb over the Hill Road finishing in Torloisk.

Clerk of the Course Clive Molyneux commented “Glen Aros / Hill Road was last run in 1999 when Chris Griffiths set the stage record at 12:01. It was the second stage in 1999 after SS1 the "Millenium Stage" round Tobermory, we ran this stage to mark the 30th anniversary of the rally.

You can probably figure out my logic in the route change for this year, 2009 will be our 40th anniversary and I fully intend to (authorities permiting) to run the Tobermory stage as a celebration of this milestone.

service1.jpgRunning it in 2008 gives us a seemless transition into what I hope will be the 2009 route, Tobermory as SS1 followed by Glen Aros / Hill Road as SS2.

The dropping of the Ardtun Stage I see as only a temporary measure, although I fully realise its unpopular it does give competitors something to do whilst the back end of the rally clears the northern stages of the Island. As a competitor I'd rather be out on the stages than sat in Service.

As you can imagine it's a real juggling act having to work within the 'Act', local Island issues, PR constraints and a thousand and one other factors.Cope07-01.jpg
The route I've run for the last 3 years is logistically as good as I can get it when you take all this into account, however I'm keen to run the Tobermory stage so sacrifices must be made”.

Regulars to the Island know full well the incredible atmosphere created by this event, along with the warm welcome given by the Mull Residents. An event on this scale requires a massive team of Marshals, with this in mind if you would like to volunteer to Marshal and join the Tour of Mull Family please contact
